Sarah Elert, MD

Sarah Elert MD grew up in southern Minnesota. She graduated with High Honors in Biology from Bates College, having spent her junior year abroad studying biology, chemistry and physiology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She worked in infectious disease research for several years, publishing and completing a Masters Degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences at the University of Minnesota. She then enrolled in medical school at the University of Minnesota medical School, receiving her degree in 2004. She completed a transitional internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX, then completed her Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

Dr. Elert practiced both inpatient and outpatient general physiatry with Sister Kenny Rehab Associates at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Her interests in non-surgical spine care led her to join Physicians Neck & Back Clinics, where she worked for 6 years. She joined PDR in 2019, and has been providing non-operative care for spine, MSK disorders, as well as performing electrodiagnostic studies (EMG’s).
Dr. Elert is a diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and a diplomate of the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine.

“I was drawn to Physiatry as a medical specialty because of its focus on function. The spine, brain, nerves, muscles and joints work together in such complex ways; and when they aren’t working well together because of injury or chronic pain, it can be devastating to my patients. Here at PDR/iSpine, I provide the expertise to bring hope and a cohesive plan of action to improve function and reduce pain.”

Dr. Elert and her husband have been held for 5 years now by their two young captors, who demand a steady supply of snacks, snuggles, and clean unicorn dresses. Their house is covered with playdough crumbles and stickers in odd places. They also have 3 house cats, and a very overfed bunny who lives under their backyard shed and eats all the tulips.
